Historical Criticism

Course Length: 90 (45 min) lessons
Memorize the Bayquniyya, a popular traditional primer in hadith criticism, and study its commentary by Shaykh ‘Abdullah Siraj al-Din in light of the historical criticism of the Bible, contemporary criticism of the reliability of hadith literature and Islamic history, and the difference between the historical methods of traditional Islamic scholarship and historians in mainstream universities.
This class meets twice a week to study Shaykh ‘Abdullah Siraj al-Din’s Sharh al-Bayquniyya and once a week to critically examine Bart Ehrman’s Misquoting Jesus in the first semester and then Jonathan Brown’s Misquoting Muhammad in the second semester. Students are required to complete the required readings from these texts and come to class prepared to discuss and critique them from the perspective of traditional Islamic scholarship.
