Qur’anic Commentary, Other Religions, Feminism, and International Relations

Course Length: 90 (45 min) lessons
Study the commentary of Surat al-Baqara through Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the Hashiya of al-Sawi and apply its interpretation to the historical development of Judaism and Christianity, contemporary issues in political science and international relations, and feminist objections to Sacred Law.
This class meets three times a week to study Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the Hashiya of al-Sawi on Surat al-Baqara, as well as a selection of verses from other suras about the People of the Book, and the rulings of Sacred Law related to women and war. Students are required to complete accompanying readings from Bart Ehrman’s Lost Christianities, Margaret Walter’s Feminism: A Very Short Introduction, and Paul Wilkinson’s International Relations: A Very Short Introduction, and to come to class ready to apply their study of Qur’anic exegesis to the concepts and problems of the assigned readings.
