Traditional Islamic Theology, Modern Science, and Atheism

Course Length: 150 (45 min) lessons
Memorize the Kharida, a traditional primer in traditional Islamic theology, the Sullam, a traditional primer in Islamic logic, and study their commentaries in light of moral and scientific objections against religion by “New Atheists”.
This class meets twice a week to study Dardir’s Sharh al-Kharida al-Bahiyya, twice a week to study Damanhuri’s Idah al-Mubham Min Ma ‘ani al-Sullam, and once a week to critically examine Richard Dawkin’s The God Delusion in the first semester and then Rupert Sheldrake’s The Science Delusion in the second semester. Students are required to complete the required readings from these texts and come to class prepared to discuss and critique them from the perspective of traditional Islamic scholarship.
