Syllabus

00. Moral Responsibility (Sample Lesson)

The purpose of the creation of the universe is our moral responsibility to God. Hamza Karamali discusses moral human actions, the Sacred Law, the sources of Sacred Law, ijtihad, taqlid, and madhabs. He then holds your hand as you compare moral responsibility to modern philosophical views on morality and moral judgments.

01. Cleanliness and Ablution

Hamza Karamali discusses the role of water in ritual purity; the causes of ritual impurity; the integrals, sunnas, and invalidators of the ritual ablution; wiping over socks (along with contemporary controversies surrounding it); and cleanliness when using the bathroom.

02. The Ritual Bath

The ritual bath is an ancient religious rite (known to Christians as baptism). Hamza Karamali takes this as a point of departure to discuss the role and rules of the ritual bath in Sacred Law.

03. Dry Ablution, Filth, and Menstruation

The purpose of ritual purity is to prepare for the ritual prayer. Hamza Karamali explains how to do ritual purity in the absence of water, how to purify one’s body for prayer, and the rules of purity related to menstrual bleeding.

04. The Greatest Worship

The ritual prayer is the greatest thing we can do. Hamza Karamali explains its role in our lives and then describes when it is obligatory, the rules and wisdom of the adhan, the conditions of prayer, and the details of its proper performance.

05. Forgetfulness and Exceptional Circumstances

Hamza Karamali explains what invalidates the prayer, what to do when you make a mistake, how to pray when you’re sick, and the rules for shortening and joining prayers when traveling.

06. Preparing for Death and the Afterlife

A thriving religious life includes regular visits to the mosque and a regular adherence to a selection of voluntary prayers in order to prepare for life after death. Hamza Karamali walks you through the rules of the group prayer, shows you how to enrich your life with voluntary prayers, and then uses the rules of burial and funeral rites to describe your passage out of this life into the afterlife.

MIDTERM Demonstrate your progress by applying your knowledge to a variety of complex real-life case studies.

07. Clothing, Beauty, and Jewelry

God created men and women differently. Hamza Karamali explains masculinity and femininity in Sacred Law and its relation to dress, tight clothing, fashion, hairstyles, facial hair, makeup, cosmetic surgery, and jewelry. He also digresses to explain what is meant by “imitating non-Muslims” how it relates to these same topics.

08. Entertainment and Food

God created us to worship him but what about having fun? Hamza Karamali discusses the place of music, movies, games, and halal food in a religious life. He digresses to also explain the rules related to gambling, drugs, and modern addictions.

09. Wealth and Zakat

Hamza Karamali explains zakatable wealth, how to calculate your zakat on your money and investments, and then uses the rules of zakat on animals, crops, gold, and silver, to explain the philosophy of wealth and economics in Sacred Law.

10. Zakat Recipients and Charity

Hamza Karamali discusses the eight categories of zakat recipients, how that relates to the economics of social justice, and the importance of charity in Muslim religious life.

11. Fasting and Ramadan

Its thriving religious activity makes Ramadan is the most memorable month of the Islamic calendar. Hamza Karamali helps you make the most of this month by walking you through the rules of fasting, tarawih (along with the controversies that surround it), and searching for laylat al-qadr.
