The Linguistic Power of the Quran - A Detailed Tafsir of Juz’ Amma Taught Live
The eloquence of the Quran is the greatest miracle of the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace). Everyone in ancient Arabia, whether friend or foe, was shaken by its power and saw clearly that its linguistic beauty surpassed anything that any human being could produce.
We need two things to grasp this miracle. First, we need to see rationally why Islam is true. Second, we need to learn the ancient Arabian context of its revelation.
This course builds on the Why Islam is True course and uses it to give the rational context of all of the suras in juz’ ‘amma and to unpack the rational arguments that they contain.
It combines that with an explanation of the historical context in which these suras were revealed and an introduction to some of the most important concepts in the traditional Islamic science of Arabic eloquence (balagha) to help you imagine how the Quran was experienced by the ancient Arabians who grasped its miraculous eloquence.
40 live classes taught over 1 year
Start Date: November 27 2022 End Date: December 3 2023
Sundays from 5:00 - 6:30 pm UTC (Convert to your timezone) (12 noon - 1:30 pm EST / 5:00 - 6:30 pm UK / 8:00 - 9:30 pm Istanbul).
ARABIC REQUIREMENT
All students, regardless of their Arabic background, are welcome to take this course. However, those with at least an introductory knowledge of the Arabic language will benefit the most. Those with an advanced knowledge of the Arabic language will also benefit from the course and will insha’allah improve their ability to taste the beauty and purpose of the Quran.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This is a detailed study of the final thirtieth part of the Quran in the linguistic context of ancient Arabia. You will study translations, memorize key vocabulary, and experience the linguistic power of the Meccan suras through a study of common Quranic rhetorical techniques. Situate your study of Quranic beauty in the original linguistic context of ancient Arabia and learn about the authoritative scholars of tafsir who have preserved the experience of the Quranic miracle using the science of Quranic eloquence (balagha).
Only 15 students will be accepted to participate live in this class. Others may join as auditors only.
Live participants will be allowed to ask questions and interact with Shaykh Hamza live.
